NUPENG Directs Members to Mobilize for the Proposed Strike

  • He says the federal government and other levels of government are very insensitive to the unbearable and debilitating socio-economic pains that Nigerians are going through
  • Says federal government’s actions disrespectful

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has directed its members in the formal and informal sectors of the oil and gas industry to mobilize for the October 3 national strike declared by the Nigerian Labor Congress.

Nigeria (NLC) and the Nigerian Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The union gave this notice in a statement by its President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale.

NUPENG, a subsidiary of NLC, urged its branches and units to take note and ensure full compliance by establishing compliance and monitoring teams at all locations of operations.

The statement reads: “Consequent upon the joint resolution of the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress as the outcome of the joint National Executive Council meeting of the two Labour Federation, held on 25th September, 2O23, we wish to inform all our members in the formal and informal sectors of the Nigeria oil and gas industry and alert the general public that the rank and file members of our union are hereby directed to commence full mobilization and ensure an unwavering compliance with the directive of the two labour centres to all affiliate unions to embark on a nationwide industrial action from midnight of 3rd October, 2023.

“The leadership of NUPENG finds it so alarming and unfortunate that the Federal Government of Nigeria and other levels of government are so insensitive to the excruciating and debilitating socio-economic challenges that Nigerians are going through as a result of the very harsh and sudden economic policies adopted by this administration without any accompanying social-economic policies designed to mitigate and mitigate the immediate consequences and impact of these complex and harsh policies on citizens.

“We are even more concerned about the apparent lack of attention and respect to the cries and aspirations of trade unions, civil society organizations and the general public by the current administration.

The administration appears to be arrogantly taking the goodwill and level of tolerance of workers and Nigerians in general for granted.

This arrogance was clearly and loudly displayed through the manner and manner in which meetings with organized labor were held, and the results of these meetings were treated with flippant and disrespect.

“The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) is aware of the huge impacts that 24 hour industrial action by organized labor can have on the business and socio-economic life of the nation, regrettably the actions and inaction of government are inextricably forcing organized labor to take this very difficult and painful path of last resort to demand the necessary social/economic policies to ameliorate and mitigate the crippling and dehumanizing living conditions of Nigerians as a whole.

“Beyond any reasonable doubt, the government has shown extreme insensitivity, respect and lack of regard for organized labor and the people of Nigeria.

“Consequently, in view of the above, NUPENG as a responsive and responsible Affiliated Union of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC), shall fully comply with the resolution of the general meeting of the NEC and We hereby direct the leaders of the four (4) Regional Councils of our Great Union to mobilize all members in the formal and informal sectors to cease operations of services effective October 3, 2023.

“All NUPENG members include petroleum tanker drivers (PTD), gas station workers (PSW), liquefied petroleum gas retailers (LPGAR) and all other allied employees in the value chain of petroleum product distribution.

This order must be complied with from midnight on Tuesday, 3 October 2023.

“All branches and units of our Union should take note and ensure full compliance by establishing compliance and monitoring teams in all operational units.”
