IGP Launched a Special Intervention Unit of Well-equipped, Well-trained Police Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday launched a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to tackle the rising crime rate in the territory.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Egbetokun said the team comprises of highly trained, well-equipped and highly mobile police officers.

According to him, the force has the capabilities to intervene quickly and effectively contain serious security breaches such as those currently threatening the FCT suburbs.

He said unequivocally that the alarming rise in criminal activities demands immediate and decisive action by all.

This initiative was not simply born out of necessity, but out of foresight, careful planning and a commitment to enhance the FCT’s already robust security architecture.

The FCT remains a bastion of security and an example of efficient urban security management and in our pursuit of excellence, we must proactively address even the slightest signs of potential threats.

“We are therefore committed to addressing all challenges head-on to protect the lives and well-being of our citizens,”IGP said.

He said the group was envisioned to include a thousand people in each state with officers and men from every tactical unit of the force.

He said the force will be complemented by a huge arsenal of operational assets, including advanced weapons, drones and vehicles.

These assets, some of which are on display here, are ready for deployment to counter security threats.

This deployment symbolizes our unwavering commitment to the safety and security of our people, and sends a clear message that criminal elements will not find sanctuary within the counter-terrorism zone, and by extension in Nigeria.

I want to reiterate here that this business is more than just an answer, it is a bold strategy aimed at dismantling the criminal networks that have entrenched themselves in our communities,” he said.

He said the squad would also engage in community-oriented policing activities, a testament to the Nigerian Police philosophy that public safety is a collaborative effort.

Egbetokun said working hand in hand with community leaders, residents and all stakeholders will strengthen the already strong ties between the police force and the communities.

He said the idea was to ensure that every corner of the FCT remained a safe haven for its residents.
