Lagos Government Closes Redeemers School Over The Death Of A 5-year-old Student During Swimming Lessons

The Lagos State Government has closed Redeemers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba following the death of a five-year-old student, Chidera Eze, during a swimming class in May 2022.

Within Nigeria recalls Chidera drowning during swimming lessons while in the care of the school at Ivory Health Club, Ikeja.

The little boy and his peers were playing near the pool during practice when he slipped in.

The deceased’s father, Mr Anthony had blamed the death of his child on the recklessness and negligence of the school officials.

Lagos State Education Commissioner Ms Folashade Adefisayo said in a statement that the school would remain closed pending an administrative investigation into its operations and procedures, and the behavior of its officials, in line with schools’ safety standards and policies.

She mentioned that the Police is investigating the matter.

Adefisayo announced that a preliminary investigation by the ministry’s Office for Quality Assurance in Education found that the Redeemers’ preschool and primary school, Ogba, had not yet completed its registration and is therefore not yet an accredited school.

She reiterated that the school will remain closed until all necessary permitting procedures are completed, while advising parents to take note of the closure and wait for the regulatory investigation to be completed.

“The Ministry is concerned about the safety of the pupils, hence the need for intervention,” she said.
