A 23-year-old Kenya Medical Student Fakes Kidnap To Obtain Money From Parents

Edwin Kamau

23-year-old medical student at Makindu Medical Training College, Kenya, Edwin Kamau was arrested by police after he staged his own kidnapping to milk money from his parents.

Criminal Investigation Department DCI said in a statement Thursday, July 7, that Edwin Kamau “disappeared” last Sunday before blocking his father and calling his mother, claiming he had been abducted.

According to Within Nigeria, “He told her that his captors demanded a ransom of Sh70,000 to free him before hanging her up,” the statement said.

“His distraught parents reported the matter to police officers, who immediately launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.

“However, the calls continued, and Kamau told his mother that his captors were close to eliminating him.

“Determined to safeguard their son’s life, they sent Sh10,000 via mobile money yesterday and another Sh40,000 today.

“Immediately Kamau received the first Sh 10,000, he went to a club in Thika to rinse his throat and have fun in the company of a baby he had met.

And as fate would have it, the woman turned out to be a Pishori admin who spiked his drink with an unknown substance and stole the cash.

“Today after regaining control of his abilities he called again and his parents sent a further Sh40,000 which he withdrew and secured in his shoes.

“By that point, the detectives were already on his tail.

When questioned, Kamau said he wasted money on his final semester’s tuition and was wondering how he would raise money to sit his exams, hence the fake story.

“He went on to reveal that he had been ‘kidnapped’ along with two other students whose parents had paid their ransom.

“Detectives stole Sh38,600 from the student who is now being held at Koyole Police Station awaiting charges.”
