Court Sentences Nigerian To 4 Years In Prison For Assaulting Ex-wife In Ireland

A Crown Court in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has sentenced a Nigerian man identified as Rotimi Adeyemo to four years in prison for assaulting his ex-wife.

According to Within Nigeria, it was revealed that Adeyemo had reportedly carried out ongoing attacks on his ex-wife and was initially charged with attempted murder, which he denied.

The attacks included strangulation, kicks, punches and threats with a knife to her throat, reports the Irish News.

The attacks reportedly took place in the presence of the unnamed woman’s eight-year-old daughter.

Adeyemo later pleaded guilty to intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to his ex-wife.

The 52-year-old dated one of his ex-wife’s neighbors after their relationship ended, but later accused the latter of using voodoo to make him impotent.

Two days after she denied the claims, Adeyemo went to his ex-wife’s house and grabbed her by the throat, leaving her unable to speak or breathe.

According to the report, he carried her into the kitchen by the throat, threatened to kill her and took a knife to slit her throat.

The unnamed ex-wife managed to grab a plate and slam it over Adeyemo’s head, causing a bleeding wound that she said made him “completely lose his composure.”

Adeyemo also punched and kicked her in the face until she passed out.

The victim suffered multiple injuries, including a collapsed lung, cerebral hemorrhage and fractures to the ribs, nose and jaw, and spent three days in the hospital.

The judge, Justice Fowler, reportedly described the aftermath of the attack, captured on police footage worn on the body, as “harrowing”.

Fowler also said the incident made the victim avoid going out, being isolated, installing security cameras to feel safe in their home, and suffering from nightmares.

During his interview with police, Adeyemo said his ex-wife was into witchcraft and repeated the claim about the spell that caused his impotence.

He also admitted he drank half a bottle of Bailey’s before heading over to her house.

The judge said he considered the defense’s submissions, which included Adeyemo’s clear criminal record, good work record, no prior domestic violence and remorse.

He also accepted medical reports that suggested the defendant was suffering a mental breakdown at the time.

The judge imposed an eight-year sentence, split equally between jail and supervised license, and issued a five-year restraining order on Adeyemo.
