Gangs of Lagos: Film Condemned by Lagos State Government as “Total Abomination”

The promoters of the “Gangs of Lagos” movie/series have come under fire from the Lagos State Government for what they termed as “total abomination” and how it portrayed the state’s culture.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Azmat Akinbel Yusuf responded by saying that the film/series is “very unprofessional and misleading while its content is derogatory to our culture.”

The Ministry is the governing body and guardian of Lagos’ culture.

The “Eyo Masquerade,” as depicted in the film, is “equally used as a symbol of honour for remarkable historical events,” Akinbile-Yussuf emphasised.

“This is the unfair profiling of a people and culture as barbarian and traitor.

It depicts a gang of murderers taking the state by storm.”

“It signifies a sweeping renewal, a purification ritual to usher in a new beginning, a beckoning of new light, acknowledging the blessings of the ancestors of Lagosians,” she opined.
