Five children were among 16 victims killed in a road accident after two vehicles collided along the Gbongan-Osogbo road in Ode-Omu on Friday night.
It was gathered that the incident involved a Lexus car coming from the Gbongan axis and a commercial bus heading towards Gbongan from Osogbo.
Eyewitnesses said that the two vehicles collided with each other and the bus overturned from the road before it caught fire.
One of the witnesses, Kareem Isau, President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, said the incident happened around 5pm on Friday but the victims did not receive timely help.
He said that the car caught fire due to the presence of a gas cylinder in the bus, adding that the fire burned for more than an hour before it was extinguished.
According to him, four people escaped, including a member of the Legion and security personnel, while others died in hell.
Confirming the accident, confirming the accident, Osun Federal Road Safety Corps spokeswoman Agnes Ojongbemi said that one of the vehicles was carrying gas that exploded during the collision and started the fire.
Additionally, the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said 16 burn victims, including five children, were evacuated from the scene.
“One victim was identified by the family and we handed over the body to them, while the remaining 15 bodies were taken to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
The injured were taken to a hospital in the district and treated,” he said.
