Lagos Hospital Elevator Installer Which Killed Doctor Arrested

  • The contractor who installed the lift that killed a doctor at Lagos Island General Hospital has been arrested, the Lagos state government said.

It was reported on Tuesday that an elevator fell from the 10th floor of a hospital building, killing cleaning lady Vwaere Diaso.

The deceased was said to have been inside the lift on her way to the ground floor to pick up a food delivery from a rider when the accident happened.

The elevator would have previously belonged to the faculty and the staff had complained about it.

The incident sparked uproar on social media and beyond, and the Lagos government set up a panel to investigate the elevator accident.

The panel set up by the Lagos state government to investigate the elevator accident is expected to present its initial findings today.

In a statement on Friday, Olumide Sogunle, Lagos Undersecretary for Information and Strategy, It said the elevator installer had been handed over to police for questioning.

Sogunle said the arrest was to ensure his availability when the panel needed him for further questioning.

“The panel met with the facility manager, LASIAMA personnel and management of General Hospital, Lagos.

The delegation also met with the elevator installer and the company officials that made the elevator.

The committee also invited an elevator expert to the scene of the accident to take a look at the elevator and give an initial opinion.

Other specialists would now take the elevator out for a thorough mechanical and electrical examination.

“As part of the panel’s activities from the first day they interviewed the elevator installer, they handed him over to the police for questioning and further questioning.

This is to ensure that the installer will always be available should the assembly need the installer for other questions.

“Six house attendants and representatives of the medical associations were appointed as witnesses.

Representatives of the house officers and medical associations were allowed to be part of the panel.

“The panel has had 48 hours to complete the measures and will therefore report on its initial findings on Saturday.

Any other measures taken thereafter will be taken by the relevant authorities.”
