Agee Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos State on Tuesday announced the reduction of its working days to three days, to help ease the economic hardships faced by the workers.
The council also lowered the fees paid by businesses and residents of the area.
The Chairman of the Council, Chief Ganiyu Egunjobi, made the statement in a statement in Agege.
“These reductions have been necessary considering the impact of the withdrawal of subsidies by the Federal Government on the residents of the area,” “Our staff are not spared by the current economic difficulties caused by the removal of oil subsidies by the government.
“While the subsidy regime removal is welcomed as it was only benefitting few elites and smugglers at the expense of the critical sectors of the economy and the common man.
“Council leaders are not aware of the unintended consequences that affect our employees and residents.
“At this time, the council on my watch is determined to offer some consolation to staff members, residents and operators,” he said.
Egunjobi added: “The various forms of tax that residents and business operators pay to the council are all reduced.”
But the council chairman said the number of working days allotted to workers has been reduced to three, based on the list so as to reduce the amount of money spent on transportation per day.
According to him, the aim is to reduce the amount of money staff spend on commuting from home to work and vice versa in view of the increase in fares.
He said only staff from the health and environment departments, who were to be on duty on normal days, were exempt from the new development.
However, the council boss has ordered four free school shuttle buses used to transport public school students to begin transporting workers freely, pending their return to school.
“Since our students are on vacation, and four of their buses are idle, we are putting it at the service of our staff to assist their staff bus in taking them to work and home,” Egunjobi said.
