The state Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, has vowed to track down and prosecute the gunmen who carried out the heinous act
The Police in Rivers State have shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the death of their Divisional Police Officer, Bako Aungbanshin.
Inside Nigeria had earlier reported how the Angbanshin was killed by suspected cultists on Friday after he and his men were ambushed in Odumude community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state on Friday night. A viral video circulating on Friday night shows The moment the gunmen showed his dismembered body.
The state Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwonyi, in a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, vowed to track down and prosecute the gunmen who carried out the heinous act.
According to the police, Angbanshin led a group of businessmen to raid some criminal hideouts in the area and was ambushed while returning from the operation.
“Unfortunately, during this battle, SP Bako Angbashim was seriously injured.
And one of his informants was also injured.
He is currently receiving medical treatment for a gunshot wound.”
The police stated that operatives of the Nigerian Army were contacted for assistance, but were unable to advance further into the bush due to what the statement describes as ‘extremely dark conditions within the dense bush’.
“The assailants captured the body of SP Bako Angbashim and forced the remaining officers to return to their base to get reinforcements.
Efforts were made to rescue and recover the body of the DPO by seeking help from the army teams deployed at FOB Base Atrako.
“However, the operation proved difficult due to the extremely dark conditions in the dense bush,” police said.
Expressing condolences to Angbashim’s family, the KP however promised to bring the perpetrators of the act to justice.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of SP Bako Angbashim and all those affected by this painful incident,” the Communist Party said.
