Local Government Chairman Filed a Lawsuit Against the Governor due to Flyovers Construction

The chairman of the 44 local government areas of Kano State have sued the state government at the Federal High Court, Abuja over its move to construct two flyovers at Tal’udu and Danagundi, all within the metropolis with 70 percent funding from their money.

Chairmen from the council were in court seeking an order to stop the government using their funds from their joint account Parties to the suit numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/1733/2023 and dated December 29, 2023 are the Kano State Government, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and the Auditor General of the state.

The plaintiffs are all 44 Local Government Councils and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter.

Still, the governor, breaking ground for the two overpasses Friday night, spoke about funding for the projects, saying his predecessors had a tradition of funding such giant projects through a joint account managed by state and local governments.

He added that once the construction is completed, all local government areas will be able to use the roads in a timely manner.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said that the project aims to ensure free flow of traffic in the municipality to improve socio-economic activities in the state.

He said the project was initiated to reduce traffic congestion, facilitate travel, beautify the city, control pollution and develop infrastructure in the old city.

He said that Kano as a big city deserved major infrastructure changes to meet the needs of more than 10 million residents and improve their social and economic well-being.
