Female Banker Commits Suicide After Dropping a Suicide Note

Nigerians on Thursday mourned the death of a female bank employee in Ikorodu, Lagos State, who committed suicide.

Amarachi Ugochukwu, 32, reportedly died after consuming an insecticide.

PUNCH Metro learned that the incident occurred on Monday inside the headquarters of a bank.

Ugochukwu had made her way to the toilet at around 1pm where she allegedly drank the insecticide without her colleagues knowing.

Other employees had started looking for her when the phone she left on her desk kept ringing and she wasn’t there to answer the calls.

A police source confirmed to one of our correspondents that Ugochukwu was later found dead in the toilet with a bottle of insecticide and a suicide note.

In the suicide note obtained by our correspondent, the lady blamed her decision to end her life on the difficult economic situation, lamenting that nothing suited her.

“Nothing was working in my life.

My numbers are low. My brain is clogged. The economy is getting tougher.

My decisions are wrong. My mind is broken.

The future doesn’t look bright at all. I see extreme difficulties.

“I can’t take the pain anymore,” she wrote in her suicide note.

Ugochukwu apologized to his parents and other family members in the suicide letter.

“I’m sorry mum, I’m sorry dad, I’m sorry Nene, Okwe, Toto, Nazor, Chuchu, Ifunanya,” she added.

She concluded by writing, “Dear God, have mercy on me!”

PUNCH Metro gathered from many sources that the bank manager reported the incident to the police.

The bank manager reportedly told the police that Ugochukwu locked herself in the toilet to kill herself and was found dead when the door was forced open.

“The corpse was removed by the police and deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital for autopsy.

The police in Lagos are investigating the incident,” the source added.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed to our correspondent that the incident happened.

When asked about the incident on Thursday, the PPRO said simply in a text message to our reporter: “I confirm that this did happen.”

Expressing grief over the incident, a Facebook user, Folusho Adebisi, claimed that the late female banker took up multiple jobs to survive.

While describing her as friendly and hardworking, Adebisi wrote that apart from her banking job, the deceased was also involved in shoe making.

He recalled how he patronized his son Tiwalade’s shoes and how he had met him in person several times.

He wrote: “Tiwalade my son woke me up this morning to the terrible news on the internet about a young lady, Amarachi Ugochukwu, a banker who committed suicide.

Amarachi is a friend of Tiwalade and a customer of his company, Donetsk Footwear Limited.

I met Amarachi on a few occasions when he came to make deliveries to Donetsk Footwear during the holidays.

“Amarachi was a young woman, amiable, friendly and hard-working, a female cobbler who combined her stressful job as a banker with another stressful shoemaking and marketing business.

I read that she left a death note complaining about a hard life, a hard economy, etc.

Activist Segun Awosanya, popularly known as Segalink on X, said the incident was a reason for those in power to continually be held accountable.

“The economy is tough for all of us, to varying degrees.

No one was spared. Even government institutions do not find it difficult to work, but they cannot complain, even though they are unfairly demonized by political opportunists.

“It is for this reason that we hold our political leaders, government and their MDAs accountable, not because anyone is hated or persecuted,” his post on X via @segalink, read in part on Thursday.

“May God give the family the courage to endure the tragedy and may others consider getting intervention at the right time. Please talk to someone.

You are not alone in your struggle.

Even the rich cry. To each their own.

The time to try doesn’t last long,” he added.
