The accident occurred at an illegal mining site that straddles Gashaka LGA in Taraba State and Toungo LGA in Adamawa State.
The miners were working deep inside the pit when the earth gave way, burying them alive.
Local authorities confirmed that no survivors were found and that the bodies could not be recovered.
Umar Adamu, the Information Officer of Toungo Local Government, said the initial death toll of 22 was tragically inaccurate and that the number of victims has risen to at least 30.
Muslims in the community gathered at the site of the collapse to offer prayers for the deceased, who were presumed to be Muslim.
