Nigerian Woman has Been Appointed a Judge in the US

Abayomi Whint, a Nigerian-American woman, made history in January 2025 when she was sworn in as a Kings County Civil Court judge in Brooklyn, New York.

Elected in November 2024, she was one of eight new judges.

A video posted on her Instagram (“Welcome to the bench, Your Honor!”) announced the accomplishment.

The ceremony, held at Brooklyn Law School, was attended by family and friends, who celebrated in white and green attire.

Whint, who took her oath of office surrounded by loved ones, has over 20 years of experience in the public sector as a litigator, mediator, and arbitrator, specializing in conflict resolution.

Her work extends beyond the courtroom; she’s known for her contributions to inclusive organizational leadership and restorative justice practices.

The Nigerian Consul General and his wife even hosted a celebratory banquet at the Nigerian Embassy in New York in her honor.
