Three Men Lekan Adekanbi, Ahmed Odetola, and Waheed Adeniyi Were Sentenced to Death by Hanging on Monday in an Ogun State High Court for the brutal murder of Kehinde Fatinoye, a CBN employee; his wife, Bukola; and their son, Oreoluwa.
The killings occurred on January 1, 2023, at the family’s Ibara GRA residence after they returned from a New Year’s Eve service.
The assailants, led by the Fatinoyes’ driver, Adekanbi, robbed the family, then murdered them, setting the house on fire and their bodies aflame.
Oreoluwa and an adopted son were bound and thrown into the Ogun River; Oreoluwa drowned, while the adopted son miraculously survived.
Adekanbi confessed to masterminding the attack because the Fatinoyes refused to give him a raise or loan.
He initially escaped custody after faking an illness, but police tracked him down to his brother’s house in Oyo State. His accomplices were later arrested.
All three admitted to their crimes and their involvement with the Aiye confraternity.
The trio, along with six others, faced 24 counts, including armed robbery, murder, arson, and obstruction of justice.
Justice Basirat Adebowale found Adekanbi, Odetola, and Adeniyi guilty on nine counts and sentenced them to death, stating they showed no remorse for the callous murder of an entire family.
She added that they could be executed by hanging or lethal injection.
The other six defendants received varying sentences: Adekanbi’s wife received two years for harboring him; his mother received one year for lying to police; a welder who helped dismantle the stolen vehicle got 14 years for receiving stolen property, along with concurrent sentences; another individual, Anuoluwapo Owolaja, got two years; while Abass Odetola and Lukmon Adewusi were acquitted.
The prosecution detailed how the men robbed the family of over N13 million in cash and property before brutally murdering them.
