… Says 79% WAEC Pass Justifies Investment In Education
The Lagos State Government is currently building iconic School structures with modern facilities in a bid to provide a conducive learning environment for pupils and students in the State.
Speaking at the commissioning of a newly renovated block of four classrooms, library and borehole donated by the Rotary Club of Lagos to Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos Island, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, said that the iconic structures will be built out of containers with state-of-the-art facilities like smart whiteboard and tablets, while it will be a green school powered by solar energy.
Mrs. Adefisayo disclosed that an iconic construction project is ongoing at Vetland College, Agege, pointing out that the State government is committed to the provision of more projects in the education sector this year, while about 1400 school projects are being undertaken to give the students relevant skills for outstanding performance.
The Commissioner called on stakeholders, NGOs and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the State Government in providing school infrastructure because the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu cannot do it alone.
While commending this laudable project done by the Rotary Club of Lagos, Mrs. Adefisayo stated that such investments are already yielding positive results, saying “I am glad to announce that our students’ performance in WAEC last year, 2021, was 79% pass which beats the previous year performance of 39% pass including Maths and English”.
She emphasised that the 21st Century requires a different set of skills for students and gave an assurance that the government will continue to invest in technology, especially for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, to improve teaching and learning so that Lagos students can go out and make a difference in the world.
Giving his remarks, the President – Rotary Club of Lagos, Rotarian Babawale Agbeyangi, expressed delight for the opportunity provided by the Ministry to support the education sector in Lagos State.
He appreciated the State Government for granting approval for the project and, therefore, urged the management and students of the school to make good use of the library as well as the classrooms by ensuring proper maintenance of the infrastructure.
Other guests present at the event include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji; Chairman, Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr. Muibi Alade Folawiyo; representative of the Group Managing Director, First Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Ariyibi; the District Governor, Rotary District 9110, Mr. Remi Bello, and the District Governor-Elect, District 9110, Mrs. Omotunde Lawson.
