400 policemen’s wives get free cancer screening

Over 400 members of the Policemen’s Wives Association (POWA) and those of other ranks (PWA) have benefitted from a four-day free breast and cervical cancer screening in Lagos.

The screening which was initiated by the wife of the Inspector General of Police, Hajiya Hajara Usman, in partnership with Monitor Health Care/Bridgevine Resources Limited and Sebeccly Cancer Care.

Flagging off the exercise yesterday in Lagos, Hajiya Usman, who’s also POWA President, said the initiative was to create cancer awareness among the women to enable them take routine examinations and prevent cancer in the country.

According to her, Nigerian women, unfortunately, bear the greatest burden of cancer diseases in the country.

She advocated affirmative action to provide cancer prevention services, early detection and treatment of the disease.

Asked if the association would undertake treatment of women diagnosed with any of the cancers during the screening, she said such cases would be referred to the IG and police authorities for intervention.

She also said her team would take the cancer campaigns across all police barracks in the country to enlighten the women on the benefits of routine checks.
