Oyo State House of Assembly Confirms Adebayo Lawal As New Deputy Governor

The Oyo State House of Assembly on Monday approved the appointment of Adebayo Lawal as the new deputy governor following the impeachment of Rauf Olaniyan.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the approval followed Mr Lawal’s nomination to lawmakers for consideration by Governor Seyi Makinde to replace Olaniyan.

NAN reports that Mr. Lawal, chairman of the State Housing Corporation, had served as Attorney General.

He is from Kisi in the Irepo Municipal Government area.

Mr. Lawal’s nomination was included in a letter from the governor to lawmakers that was presented to the plenary session.

NAN reports that the House went on brief hiatus shortly after Mr Olaniyan was removed from office as Lieutenant Governor.

Lawmakers later reconvened around 12:15 p.m. to consider the appointment of the new Deputy Governor.

The spokesman, Adebo Ogundoyin, reading the executive branch’s letter, said it was in response to an earlier letter from lawmakers to the governor dated July 18 informing him of Mr Olaniyan’s impeachment.

House Majority Leader Sanjo Adedoyin defended Mr Lawal’s nomination, saying the nomination should be favorably considered, approved and adopted given its history of contributing to the state’s progress.

Kazeem Olayanju, representing the Irepo/Olorunsogo state constituency, supported the motion and said the House should confirm Mr Lawal as the new deputy governor of Oyo state.

In his remarks, the speaker presented the nomination to an oral vote that went in the direction of “Yes.”

According to him, the vote confirmed Mr Lawal as the state’s deputy governor.

The House adjourned the plenary session until 21 July.
