Gunmen reportedly killed one police officer and injured another at a checkpoint in Bayelsa state.

According to Within Nigeria, it was learnt that the gunmen attacked officers in Famgbe township in the state’s Yenagoa Local Government Area on Saturday.

At the time of reporting, the motive for the attack had not yet been clarified.

However, a security source informed journalists that police officers in the area were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation when they were ambushed by the gunmen.

The security source said the police patrol is a follow-up to intelligence information pointing to an increase in violent crimes along the Famgbe-Ayama axis in the Yenagoa suburbs.

According to the security source, who spoke confidentially, the police engaged the crooks in a gun duel that forced them to flee into the bush.

But the deceased officer fell victim to the attackers’ bullets, while another was injured in the exchange of fire.

A police source confirmed the incident and said one officer was killed, another injured, while a child, also scratched by a bullet, was stabilized at a clinic.

The source said police are on the trail of the attackers.
