Tragedy struck when a man identified as Chima and his mistress reportedly hacked the man’s wife with a machete in Omerelu Township, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.

Troubles were revealed to have started when the man’s wife, identified as Nwakaego, confronted him about bringing his lover into her home on Monday.

According to information gathered from Within Nigeria website, the man is said to have fled after realizing the enormity of his actions as there were bloodstains all over the house.

Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, elder brother of battered woman identified as Anayo Warisi.

The abused woman’s older brother, Anayo Warisi, speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, said his in-laws and lover attacked his sister while the man freely used a machete on his wife.

Warisi said his sister was seriously injured, particularly to her leg, from the matchete cuts inflicted on her and was taken to hospital.

He said: “This morning (Monday) my sister’s husband brought another woman to his home. So she asked him why he did it. He and his lover started beating her seriously.

“Then he cut her all over with the match, but her leg is worse. My elders took her to the hospital in Elele, but she was rejected there because the injury was very bad.

“So they moved her to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) where she is now.

“We want the husband arrested for attempted murder. No one knows what will happen next if we let it sink. So let justice be done.”

Meanwhile, a group, the Center for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Rivers State Corporation Secretary Gladys Oyenmwen said anyone found guilty should be brought to justice.

She said: “Domestic violence, under whatever guise, has no place in our society and should not be condoned, regardless of who is involved.

“Therefore we are calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations and anyone found guilty should be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Rivers State Police Command spokeswoman Grace Iringe Koko confirmed the incident and said the fleeing man’s lover was arrested.

“The woman was arrested and the case was referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” she said.

When asked about the man’s whereabouts, Iringe-Koko, a police superintendent, said an investigation was ongoing and everyone was in high gear to ensure he was apprehended.
