Ibadan Poly Students Protest Hostel Refusal Fee Hike

Students at the Ibadan Institute of Technology in Oyo state staged a demonstration on Monday against the institution’s management raising the dormitory rejection fee.

Hundreds of students blocked the school gate and the ever-busy Sango-Poly junction, causing traffic jams before marching to the Agodi State Secretariat, Ibadan.

All roads within the Secretariat are also closed.

According to Inside Nigeria, it was gathered that the lodge refusal fee was initially five thousand naira before the management raised it to fifteen thousand naira.

One of the protesters, Abiodun, another name withheld, said: “Normally we pay thirty thousand naira for accommodation every season but for those who do not want to stay in the hostel, they pay refusal fees of five thousand naira.

But the management just woke up and said they increased the withdrawal fee from five thousand naira to fifteen thousand naira.”

“The management also said the hostel fee is compulsory now for all the students, including those who are not staying in the campus (off campus),” she explained.

They also said that they were tired of the constant use of advisors to manage institutional affairs.

Protesters chanted anti-government songs, saying the consultant’s activities had slowed down the development of the institution.
