WAEC Publishes 2023 Results

The results of 262,803 candidates are withheld due to reports of cases of unfair examinations Pass rate increased

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2023 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The examination body released the result on Monday.

Patrick Aregan, WAEC Head of Nigerian Office (HNO), said that out of a total of 1,613,733 candidates who sat for the examination, the results of 262,803 candidates were withheld “due to reports of examination malpractices”.

He said there was an improvement in the pass rate with a total of 1,361,608 candidates, representing 84.38 per cent, achieving grades and above in at least five subjects with or without English or Mathematics.

In addition, 1,287,920 candidates, representing 79.81 percent of the total candidates, obtained credits or higher in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Meanwhile, candidates from eight states owing the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, for various services rendered, will not receive their results of the 2023 West African Tertiary Certificate Examination, WASSCE.

WAEC revealed this to reporters on Monday at the Press Briefing Hall, WAEC National Office, Yaba.

The agency regretted that not being able to pay for the services provided poses a major challenge in the activities of the examination board.

Answering a question about states that owe the WAEC, WAEC’s National Officer Mr. Patrick Areghan said, “About eight states owe the WAEC.

We won’t mention all of them as some will pay.

“However, Zamfara and Niger are the most indebted.

Once again, Zamfara did not present a single candidate for WASSCE this year,” said Aregan.
