CP Strongly Instructs CID to Investigate Extrajudicial Killing of Man

CP Aderemi Adeoye, Commissioner of Police in Anambra, has ordered a thorough investigation into the death one Arinze Obunadike, a trader at bridgehead drug market in the commercial city of Onitsha.

Adeoye issued the order when Mr. Golden Iloh, a member representing Ihiala II Constituency in the Anambra House of Assembly, lodged a formal complaint about the killing at the command headquarters in Awka on Monday. Iloh said Obunadike, who hails from Okija in Ihiala Local Government Area, studied Political Science at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, before his apprenticeship in the market.

The CP, who appreciated the people of the constituency and the family of the deceased for pursuing the matter peacefully, said the investigation would continue until the culprits are brought to justice.

Adoy said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been directed to take over the case for a thorough investigation, and assured that the police will ensure that justice is done and the perpetrators are brought to justice. All those involved in court murder should be brought to justice.

According to him, the incident occurred between the anti-touting squad supported by Anambra Vigilance Group and the deceased.

“I don’t have all the facts about what happened, but I have instructed the Criminal Investigation Department to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“No person has the authority or right to take the life of another person, and in cases where the victim is dead and unable to speak for himself, the government will speak on his behalf.

“The incident occurred in the open, meaning there are witnesses.

We will continue to investigate until those involved are identified, arrested and prosecuted in court.”

“The killers must have their day in court and the bereaved will see that justice is done,” he said.

The lawmaker said the deceased, who was killed on February 16, was a hard-working young man with no criminal record.

He said although nothing can bring the dead back to life, all they want is to expose those involved and ensure they are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

Iloh said the people of Okija and the entire Ihiala Constituency II had decided not to take the laws into their own hands but decided to take the matter to Police with the confidence that they would treat the case diligently.
