President Bola Tinubu has expressed regret over the deaths and property damage caused by the current statewide protest.
Speaking on Sunday on a national broadcast, Tinubu declared that his administration will not stand by and watch as the country descends into chaos.
He pleaded with Nigerians who were criticizing his government to end their protests right away and engage in conversation.
The President expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and said it was his responsibility to maintain public order.
Additionally, he read the Riot Act to individuals who threatened other tribes in order to use the protest to further their ethnoreligious goal.
“It is my duty as this nation’s president to maintain public order,” he declared.
As per my constitutional pledge to safeguard the lives and belongings of each and every person, our government will not watch helplessly as a select few with a distinct political objective rip this country apart.
“Given the situation, I hereby order demonstrators and the organizers to halt all further demonstrations and make space for dialogue, which I have always participated in whenever possible.”Nigeria needs everyone to work together to reshape the country’s destiny, regardless of age, party, tribe, religion, or other divides.
“To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation to threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you,” the statement reads.
Ethnic prejudice and other such threats have no place in the Nigeria we are trying to establish, He stated.
Along with expressing his pain at the deaths in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and other states, President Tinubu also mentioned that “contrary to the protest organizers’ promise that the protest would be peaceful nationwide, there has been wanton looting of supermarkets and shops and destruction of public facilities in some states.
“As a country, we regress when properties are destroyed since limited resources must be spent once more to rebuild them.
