How Tinubu Deceived Us – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress calls the situation traumatic and terrifying and accuses President Tinubu of failing Nigerians by raising the price of gasoline.

NLC President Ajaero accuses the administration of endangering citizens by abandoning its pledges to maintain minimum wage and fuel prices.

By recently boosting petrol prices and causing shortages across the nation, President Bola Tinubu has come under fire from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for allegedly disrespecting both the labor movement and all Nigerians.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, voiced his displeasure on Tuesday over the continuous confusion around the pricing of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also referred to as gasoline, calling the situation “traumatic and nightmarish.”

Ajaero recounted that during discussions for a new minimum wage, President Tinubu had given the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) an option: either N250,000 with a possible increase in fuel prices or N70,000 with no change in fuel prices.

Ajaero chastised the government for its actions, saying that the price of gas has gone up much more, endangering more Nigerians and companies, rather than staying at the agreed level.

“We remember clearly when Mr. President offered us the devil’s choices: N70,000 (at previous PMS rates) or N250,000 as a minimum wage (subject to an increase in the pump price between N1,500 and N2,000).” the speaker said.

We chose the latter because we could not allow Nigerians to suffer any more injustice.”

But now, hardly a month later, the government has yet to start paying the new national minimum wage, leaving us to deal with an incomprehensible reality.

It’s terrifying and upsetting at the same time.

Ajaero also attacked the government’s handling of the gasoline subsidy problem, claiming that when the NLC expressed concerns about the government’s defective and unsustainable strategy, supporters of the administration disregarded the warnings, claiming they were ignorant of fundamental economics. He then on,

“But this act of betrayal is consistent with the character of this government, if the truth be told.”

We remember the National Assembly’s leadership assuring us that the 250% tariff hike had been handled and that there was no need to confront the Minister of Power in public during that meeting.

“The rate has risen further, endangering more Nigerians and businesses, instead of the anticipated reversal.

The End-Hunger/End Bad Governance protests are a result of the government’s extreme right-wing market policies, which have combined to bring Nigeria and its people to an all-time low.
