Why We Opened Fire On Ibeju Lekki Youth – Police

Lagos Police PRO, Hundeyin

Lagos State Police Command has defended the use of violence against youth in Ibeju Lekki.

Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin said on Thursday.

The spokesman explained that the incident happened on Wednesday after police officers made an arrest.

Hundeyin said youths in the area caught wind and mobilized to rescue the person currently in custody.

PPRO added that the mob arrived late and on their way back saw two armed people guarding a company.

“More than 200 angry youths decided to pounce on the police officers, throwing stones at them and destroying a Lexus SUV inside,” he said.

Police said that when it became apparent that the angry citizens were desperate to lynch the officers, they were “right to use their firearms”.

One of the attackers was hit and is currently being treated in hospital.

Hundeyin added that the agents were able to protect themselves and prevent further wanton destruction.

“Normality has returned to the region.

The investigation has begun to detain other fleeing attackers, after which they will be prosecuted,” the statement added.
