Hon. Sola Giwa

The Lagos State Government has said it is investigating the union fracas that occurred this morning in Iyana-Iba and Lagos Island, while warning protesting members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to call for peace and the tranquility enjoyed in the country not to disturb the state.

In a press release to The Info Page News, the governor’s special adviser on transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, issued the warning today after unrest broke out in some parts of the state after some RTEAN union members protested the removal of the national president of their union demanded.

Addressing the protesting members, the Transport Special Adviser called for calm and said the government will not tolerate the breakdown of law and order in the state.

He added that the police commissioner had been duly informed and he had dispatched officers to the affected areas to deal with erring union members.

The special adviser said the state is investigating the allegations against the national union leader and will resolve any outstanding issues and urge members to keep the peace.

“The Government has listened to your outcry, we urge you to keep the peace as we will not hesitate to invoke the Lagos State Riot Act if necessary,” he added.

Giwa reiterated the need for unions to always find peaceful ways to resolve their indifference, rather than leading to riots and violence. He promised to publish the results of the investigation when it was completed.
