Gang of Secondary School Students Beat up Teacher who Stopped Them From Cheating

A gang of ten secondary school students in Ogun State reportedly raped and assaulted a teacher, Kolawole Shonuga, who stopped one of them from cheating during an examination at the school.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Isanbi Comprehensive High School in the Ikenne Local Government Area, in the state’s Ilisan-Remo, the Daily Trust reported.

According to Daily Trust, it was gathered that Sonuga, while proctoring the unitary examination for SS1 Art class students, caught one Asimi Adebanjo, 18, cheating and confiscated his paper.

Witnesses revealed that after school, the student and his classmates ambushed the teacher at the school gate and beat him.

One of them, Kazeem Adelaja, allegedly hit Shonuga in the head with a stick while the others beat him.

It was gathered that the police from the Remo department later pounced on the students and arrested about 10 of them.

Police spokesman Omotola Odutola confirmed the incident, saying Shonuga had prepared an official report on the alleged attack on the Remo Police Unit.

Odutola also confirmed the arrest of ten suspects.

Our Correspo obtained that the suspects were charged in court with assault, but the order’s Public Relations Officer did not respond to questions about the charge.

State Chairman of the Secondary Schools Academic Staff Union (ASUSS), Felix Agbesanwa, frowned at the incident and insisted that students must face the wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent.

“The incident is real and I have been informed.

Our stand is that any student who raises his hand against his teacher should face the wrath of the law. There is no going back on this.

No student can raise their hand to the teacher, whether it is Ogun teacher or permanent teacher, the teacher is the teacher.”

“They should be forced to face the law to serve as a deterrent. I have learned that they have been charged before the courts.”

The state government has also condemned this action and said it will not tolerate disciplinary behavior by learners across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu gave this warning in Abeokuta while receiving the new executive of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN).

He noted that part of the effort was the signing of Commitment Forms by students, parents and school principals to hold students and parents accountable for any misbehavior of both students and parents, saying the aim was to have a safe learning environment free from pandemonium of any kind.

“I am using this opportunity to advise parents to talk to their children, warn them, because we will not tolerate any form of indiscipline by any child.

Any student misbehaving in school will be dealt with appropriately,” he said.
