This was in a letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Kayode Olabanji and signed by the President of the Association, Dr. Mashu Adeyemi.

“The above association is writing to inform you of the decision of the extraordinary congress held today to commence an indefinite strike with immediate effect.

This follows the actions of hoodlums who stormed the hospital’s accident and emergency unit in the early hours of today and assaulted several members of the association, destroying some of the hospital’s property and stole a body during the attack.

This attack is took place at a time when our members are facing workload and exhaustion as well as understanding with the state government over non-implementation of our demands on better welfare, which is resulting in poor remuneration.

We would like to use this opportunity to call on the management of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) and the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice for their actions.

We also request the state government, as a matter of urgency, to address our outstanding demands, which border on improving the welfare of our members.

We implore management and government to provide a lasting solution to these incessant attacks on our members and ensure safety when at work.

We call on the state assembly to pass a bill to criminalize assault on health workers in Ekiti State.

The strike will not be called off until our demands are met. Confirming the development, the spokesperson in charge of the University Teaching Hospital, Rolek Adewunmi, said four armed additional policemen have already been deployed to ensure security at the hospital.

She further revealed that the state police commissioner has since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and pledged to ensure they are arrested and face the wrath of the law.

He pointed out that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Oke-Ila Division, SP Sesan Falade, has also assured regular patrolling of the hospital premises.

Also, the EKSUTH boss noted that the management and DPO had met with the State Chairman of the Land Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Sunday Adeola and assigned him to produce the ring leader because the management had heard that the person in question was a member of the association.

The CMD further clarified that the person who was involved in the recent similar incident in Neo Natal ward will face the wrath of the law as the case is already in court and the culprit has been booked.

Prof. Olabanji, therefore, appealed to the workforce to calm down as steps are going in the right direction to ensure that such an incident does not happen again, saying the management will not tolerate any harassment of its employees in the discharge of their duties.
